Volunteering Activity:

Chairman of Himley CC / Coach of age group squad / Assists groundsman / Represents Club on a variety of bodies

Reason for nomination:

Gordon has played cricket since he was at primary school aged 7 and his involvement as a player and administrator covers more than 45 years. He has been Chairman of Himley Cricket Club for more than 23 years.  He gives in excess of 12 hours per week to volunteering at the Cricket Club and much more than this in the summer. Gordon is Chairman of Himley CC and is a youth team coach/manager. He has captained Club teams in the past and has been a hard working committee member prior to becoming Chairman in 1995.

Gordon was manager of the Under-15 Himley CC team that won the ECB National age group title in 2015. Gordon has created facilities at Himley Cricket Club that are the envy of many other cricket clubs. A modern pavilion complements one of the best grounds in the Midlands and a second ground has ensured that more people are able to play their cricket at home. Practice facilities are well used and, when not in use for cricket, are used for fitness training and a regular boot camp. More than 200 people linked to Himley Cricket Club benefit each week throughout the summer from the efforts of Gordon and his committee colleagues. The boot camp can attract more than 100 participants each week, throughout the year. Gordon’s efforts have directly benefitted the Cricket Club but have also been used for schools, district and county age groups fixtures as well as the annual T—20 floodlit competition.

Gordon was instrumental in developing the junior section when he took over as Chairman in 1995. Initially there were no more than 20 young people taking part. Now there are in excess of 100 junior members and over the years thousands of young people have enjoyed a quality cricket experience at Himley. Gordon is supported by a strong committee with well-defined roles and responsibilities which enables progress to be made when developments are planned. Junior cricket is well organised with a well-established coaching infrastructure and coaches and team managers at all age groups.

Gordon is tenacious and is fiercely proud of Himley Cricket Club. It is Gordon’s drive and determination as Chairman over the past 23 years that has seen the Club develop with new premises and facilities, a huge increase in membership levels and promotion at 1st and 2nd XI level from the Staffordshire Clubs Cricket Championship to the Birmingham and District Cricket League. On Saturdays the Club now 5 fields team in the Birmingham and District Cricket League, the Worcestershire County League and the Staffordshire Clubs Cricket Championship. .
