Highly Commended – Michael Price

Michael’s commitment to White House Cancer Support has been amazing and he makes a huge difference with his volunteering activities.

Volunteering Activity:

Mike started as a volunteer driver and did this for 10 years, giving up many hours each week, assisting cancer patients in getting to hospital appointments. For patients, this took away the stress of driving, finding a parking space, taking care of expensive parking charges (the Whitehouse covers these) and providing support and befriending, at what is a very anxious time for patients. In this, Mike provided an invaluable door to door, return service.

Today he organises and supports several of the charity’s various support groups including the Halesowen, Stourbridge and Brierley Hill groups, plus the prostate and skin cancer support groups.

This involves him offering support to attendees, liaising with venues and arranging speakers.

Mike also goes the extra mile, literally, unofficially transporting people to and from the groups, people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend.

Another of his acts of generosity is collecting donated items from Sainsbury’s on a weekly basis and bringing them to the office.

Mike will attend any fundraising event, as a representative for the charity, and is willing to do whatever tasks the charity asks of him.

Reason for nomination:

Michael has gone through his own cancer diagnoses but continues to volunteer and help other people, who need the support of The White House. He always puts other first, nothing is too much trouble for him and he will go out of his way to help the charity and all those we support.

He is kind hearted, with a great sense of humour and all of the people he has supported in the groups have commented on how kind and supportive he is.

Mike inspires us all, partly with the sheer amount that he does for us, at the grand age of 80 and with his humility and generous positive attitude. He even requested donations for The Whitehouse, for his 80th Birthday, in lieu of gifts from his family and friends.

He was very proud to present a total sum of £250, to The Whitehouse, after his birthday in August.

He says very little about what he does for us and is modest, about all of the activities he provides for us. He is kind hearted and always willing to help. Our supporters, service users and staff love him and we are incredibly proud to say that he volunteers for White House Cancer support.
